VOTE NO • The Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) usurped parliamentary authority by gratuitously disallowing the truth defense, as explained at  www.ukar.org/martin/martin18.html • Now the CHRC attempts to usurp parliamentary authority a second time by disallowing the parliamentary immunity defense:  "It was clear to me that the Canadian Human Rights Act, which is quasi-constitutional legislation and which prohibits discrimination on a variety of grounds including race and religion, trumps issues of privilege of the House of Commons." � Irwin Cotler The Hill Times 25-Oct-2004 • Disallowing the parliamentary immunity defense when the complaint is discrimination in parliamentary hiring throws the door wide open to disallowing the parliamentary immunity defense when the complaint is discrimination in parliamentary speech.  What can be expected next, then, is the CHRC viewing parliamentary debate as subject to its jurisdiction.  With the defenses of parliamentary privilege and of truth disallowed, Justice Minister and Attorney General Irwin Cotler would become, in effect, Canada's first Parliamentary Censor. • Please preserve Canadian freedoms.  Legislate the CHRC to allow the truth defense.  Prohibit the CHRC encroaching on parliamentary privilege.  Remind the CHRC and the courts that legislative authority resides in the legislature.
