Holodomor Bill Introduced in Quebec
On the 76th anniversary of the famine genocide in Ukraine 1932-33

November 26, 2009-Montreal, Quebec -- Yesterday members of the Quebec National Assembly unanimously accepted the introduction of a private member's bill recognizing the Holodomor demonstrating their support with applause.

The bill was introduced by Louise Beaudoin, Parti Québécois MNA for Montreal's Rosemont riding.  The legislation recognizes the Holodomor as an act of genocide and calls for the fourth Saturday in November to be designated as Holodomor Memorial Day in the province.  More than fifty representatives of Quebec's Ukrainian community were present to witness the historic moment in the National Assembly.  Second reading of the bill is scheduled for spring 2010.

On the same day, a private member's bill on Holodomor recognition was also introduced in British Columbia.  The provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario have previously enacted legislation recognizing the Holodomor and honouring the survivors of this crime against humanity.  The Government of Canada officially recognized the Holodomor in 2008 and designated a National Holodomor Memorial Day which this year will be marked on Saturday, November 28, 2009.

National Holodomor Awareness Week continues through November 29.  For a list of commemorative events in your community visit http://www.ucc.ca/holodomor/events.htm
